We had the pleasure of reviewing CW’s iZombie: The Complete Second Season. Season 2 explores more of Liv and Major’s romance and how they deal with her zombie lifestyle. Blaine is human again, leaving viewers to wonder what he’s up to next. Clive, her detective liaison is closer to finding out Liv’s secret, and her new roommate is spying on her for the latest big bad this season.
This time around the characters and the writing for iZombie are more developed. If you haven’t seen iZombie: The Complete First Season, then we recommend watching that first. Here’s our review. If you want to just jump right in you don’t necessarily need to watch the first season to understand what’s going on, as this season gives a recap. However you’ll appreciate the story progression and character development that Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright have brought to Chris Roberson and Mike Allred’s DC Vertigo title.
iZombie is a zombie comedy that understands what it is without being over the top. The show never takes itself to seriously, and there’s just the right amount of drama and comedy. Of course you’d expect nothing less coming from the show runner who brought us Veronica Mars. (Speaking of which, a famous line from that show is said in Episode “Red Dead Housewife“.) Liv’s food brain personalities are more varied this season. Some of her notable personalities come from episodes “Grumpy Old Live” and “Zombie Bro”. The perps of the week are also more dynamic and human and not inherently evil like her recurring nemesis Blaine. The way Liv eats brains this season is much more inventive from tomato to lasagna recipes. It also gives Rose McIver tons of good acting material to chew on. (Seriously, no pun intended.) I’d first seen her on Masters Of Sex, but she has so much space to branch out here and really show her range.
The characters this season are more fleshed out. Without giving too much away, Major plays an important role this season. Her boss Ravi is still on the search for the zombie cure. Clive starts to suspect there is more to Liv then she lets on. Viewers who have invested into these people will get more of that payoff.
We recommend picking up iZombie: The Complete Second Season. If you enjoyed Season 1, then you will dig The Complete Second Season even more. Of course every good bluray comes with it’s special features. Deleted scenes of course are a treat. We always recommend watching those after viewing the season in it’s entirety. And it’s always nice to watch the cast at Comic Con. Be sure to pick up your copy of iZombie: The Complete Second Season on Amazon today!
