Collectable Review: Terraria Toy Line

If you’re struggling for a gift idea this Christmas, or perhaps you’re just looking to spoil yourself, listen up, because boy oh oh boy do I have the review for you. Particularly if you or your loved one is in to Terraria… That’s right folks, there is now an all new Terraria Toy Line available, and just in time too!

Starting things off we have the action figure line, which consist of five single packs and also one multipack. Included amongst my sample materials were the Goblin Tinkerer (complete with a little staff, crafting table and other accessories), the Gold Armor Player (with sword, staff, pickaxe and forging iron) and the Witch Doctor (with cauldron, staff and a couple of other things). The World Collectors Pack comes with four humanoid figures (Guide, Zombie, Silver Armor Player and Tim the skeleton wizard) and two monsters (Green Slime and Demon Eye). The World Collectors Pack gives you a lot of bang for your buck with some nice character variety included within, but doesn’t come with any weapons or accessories, so you may have to borrow some weapons from the single packs.

TerrariaSingleFiguresWith an average height of about 6.5cm tall, the level of detail in the figures was excellent, the pixelated decorations perfectly matching the blocky shape of the figures and obviously the game characters too. Even the accessories were rocking some highly detailed designs! Despite the fact that the figures all consist of block shapes, the level of character that they sport is excellent. The Gold Armor Player has a removable helmet and very expressive eyebrows, the Zombie has a hollowed out section where its ribs are showing, and the Goblin Tinkerer is almost cute in a weird, Smurf-like way. All of the figures can twist from their waists, and have movable arms, legs and necks.

TerrariaMultiPackNext up we’ve got the small plush range. These guys, like the action figures, are oozing with personality and character. For my review I scored an Eye Of Cthulhu and a Skeletron. The Eye Of Cthulhu stands at approximately 10.5cm tall, and is one of the cutest pixel-style plush eyeballs I have ever seen, and comes complete with bright iris colours and loads of floppy eye tendons… those things are called tendons, right? Pro tip: it also doubles as a decidedly stylish ball. The Skeletron has a somewhat more drab looking colour palette and a decidedly evil looking appearance, whilst still rocking its own sense of cutesy pixelated charm. The Skeletron plush toy is approximately 13.5cm tall.

TerrariaEyeCthulhuIf you were are the sort of person who really likes to show off their plush pieces with pride, then perhaps the Terraria feature plush assortment is more your speed. The Eye Of Cthulhu returns, but this time in its much more sinister form… the form with a huge gaping mouth and loads of sharp jagged teeth… In addition to its much larger size over the small Eye Of Cthulhu (the feature version is about the same size as a soccer ball, measuring at approximately 22cm tall), the feature Eye Of Cthulhu plays noises when pressed. On first press a nice, beastly growl comes out, but on the second press, the Eye Of Cthulhu fight theme music is played for a healthy 24 seconds… pretty epic for a plush toy, huh?

TerrariaSkeletronThe other feature plush is the ultimate version of the Skeletron: Skeletron Prime. Again, this toy is significantly larger than its small counterpart (approximately 25.5cm tall), and also rocks a different colour scheme, but the biggest different is the eyes. When the Skeletron Prime is shaken, its red eyes flicker a bright, blinking crimson colour, which looks positively badass in a pitch black environment!

TerrariaLargeEyeLast and by no means least is the ultimate Terraria toy for all enthusiastic cosplayers: the Night’s Edge Sword. Wonderfully modelled on its in-game counterpart, the Night’s Edge Sword is just under 60cm tall, features a very lightweight design and comfortable hilt, and sports a multi-toned purple pixel aesthetic. While the colours look slightly different to the in-game sword, as far as my eyes can tell, physically it is a pixel-perfect replica of the game sword. I’m not afraid to admit, I had a litte too much fun swinging this bad-boy around…

TerrariaSkeletronPrimeAll told, I loved the Terraria Toy Line. Sure, I had a couple of gripes, one of which being that the Skeletron Prime plush didn’t have any activation instructions, so for a while I thought it would only work when I slammed it into something. And while I adored the Witch Doctor action figure, the jagged teeth of its skull mask did unfortunately chip a little when I tried to twist its head from side to side (OK, I may have tried a little too hard with the twisting, but still, the design possibly could have been better). Apart from these couple of quibbles though? Nada, not a single worry to be had!

TerrariaSwordSo, if you’re looking for a very last minute gift idea for a Terraria fan (even if that fan happens to be yourself), the Terraria Toy Line is just the ticket you need. Whether the recipient is in to action figures, plush toys or cosplay accessories, the various offerings from the Terraria Toy Line will definitely not disappoint, so be sure to hunt for them at EB Games, Toys”R”Us and other good toy retailers. I know that I will be playing with – I mean, “testing” – my review samples for quite a while to come.

Rating: ★★★★½

ComicsOnline gives the Terraria Toy Line 4.5 out of 5 two-dimensional pixelated stars… of death.

Audio visual multimedia extraordinaire (at least in his own mind), Aussie Dave dragged Jayden into this glorious den of geek pop culture, and it's gonna take more than what you can offer to drag him away. Unless you bribe him with Ninja Turtles related merchandise... then all bets are off.
