On October 7th, Cartoon Network’s hit show Adventure Time, will be released on Blu-ray and DVD. Though the show recently got renewed for it’s 7th season, up to season four is available to own.  The rest can be streamed online on Cartoon Network or Netflix.  If you’ve never seen the show, now is a good time as any to start!

For those not familiar with Adventure Time, everything you need to know is told in the opening sequence theme song.  The theme is sung and performed by series creator Pendleton Ward.  It’s basically about 2 best friends, a superhuman dog named Jake and Finn the last human on earth.  The duo experience random adventures and life lessons in a post apocalyptic  world.  More information on the show and it’s back story can be found on their wikipedia page.

If you are familiar with the show, you know that watching the previous episodes is not a requirement for viewing.  Adventure Time is easy to pick up even after the first 5 minutes.  This is not to say the show doesn’t have any depth.  As random and funny as the episodes are, adult humor is even more present than cartoon predecessors SpongeBob SquarePants, Shrek, Ren and Stimpy, and the latest, The Lego Movie.

Adventure Time: The Complete Fourth Season, features 26 episodes, full audio commentary, high resolution cover art, and their main feature Distant Bands: The Music Of Adventure Time.  Some of the themes covered in season four  are destructive relationships covered in Fire Princess.  Finn falls in love with a princess who is physically harmful to him.  The topic of jealousy is later covered in Burning Low where Finn’s first crush Princess Bubblegum is trying to prevent Finn and Fire Princess from getting together.

Dreams Of Love covers the topic of public displays of affection.  In this episode Tree Trunks and Mr. Pigs fall in love.  Although Finn and Jake are happy for them, their consistent displays of affection make them and everyone in the town uncomfortable.  Narcissistic behavior is covered in  Gotcha with Lumps wanting to pose as a sexy secretary for her own social experiment.  She believes Finn and Jake hire her for that reason.  Along with this theme is In Your Footsteps, a cloning experiment gone wrong by Princess Bubblegum who wishes to extend her legacy after she’s long gone.

One of the thing’s I’ve always loved about Adventure Time is the music.  Distant Bands is a 19 minute bonus feature that covers the music written and composed since season one. Being a writer/composer myself, I’ve always admired that the writers of the show also scored and wrote the songs for the episodes. A fan favorite was a song called “Bacon Pancakes” written by one of the show’s writers Rebecca Sugar. Sugar goes into the history of that song and even shows some footage of her performing it at Comic Con International!  Another surprise is the juicy soundbite at the beginning of the Adventure Time theme song.

Adventure Time is a special show that stands out on it’s own among today’s cartoon satire.  You can tell the writer’s of the show really love their job from watching the Distant Bands feature. The show is intended for kids from 4-11 but because of the nature of the show, it appeals to all ages.  If you’d like to watch a show that’s guaranteed to be a good time with your kid or even just by yourself, then I would recommend picking up a copy of Adventure Time: The Complete Fourth Season on Blu-ray or DVD October 7th at your local Best Buy or preorder from Amazon today!
