Almost Human: Not Renewed

ALMOST-HUMAN

By Kim Filchak, writer and professional bibliophile.

A moment of silence for what could have been, Almost Human is no more. We saw it coming, a great premise, awesome a cast and loyal fans stand no chance against the bottom line at Fox. This is not the first time Fox has dropped a show just when it was getting good, and it will not be the last. (Browncoats NEVER forget.)

Deadline reported on Tuesday that sadly Fox has not to renew the show from J.J. Abrams and J.H. Wyman. The futurist series, starring Karl Urban as Detective John Kennex and Michael Ealy as the android Dorian, was a bright spot of true science fiction in a television landscape that has seen the number of such show dwindle over the last few years.

Deadline reports:

“[The show] got off to a sluggish start in November but held enough ground to at least earn renewal consideration, often finishing on par with its Monday companion (the already-renewed drama The Following). In fact, the March season (and series) finale of Almost Human logged a 1.5 rating in 18-49, matching the Live+Same Day rating for last night’s finale of The Following. (The Following is a bigger DVR draw). Almost Human‘s chances started to slip once Fox’s drama pilots started to come in. All three of them — Gotham, The Red Band Society and Empire – are considered strong contenders for a series pickup.”

This is not surprising, in a year where Fox had an unequivocal success in the gothic/camp supernatural drama Sleepy Hollow there was no way they were going to take a chance on a show that pulled sub-optimal ratings with as high a budget as Almost Human.

So we say goodbye to grumpy, possibly sociopathic, super cop Kennex and his best android guy Dorian. No more will we experience the sheer perfection that was thier painfully awkward car conversations as Dorian trolled Kennex like it was written into his base code. Goodbye Captain Maldonado who always seemed about one more wisecrack from bitch slapping Kennex into a wall. Goodbye Ruddy who was sweetly awkward and always reminded me of Kriger with better boundaries. And Minka Kelly’s Detective Stahl, she was really pretty and could have become more than that if only the show had been given a second season to explore her character more. Good bye plotlines that will never get resolved (Seriously, WTF is up with the wall? I feel we barely got anything on that and it was one of the most intriguing parts of the show!) and goodbye anatomically incorrect MX models, I will miss you most of all.
