What a year. 2013’s Supanova Sydney was its biggest yet, with 39,400 patrons attending over the three day period.
Supastar guests included Star Wars’ own Princess Leia, Carrie Fisher; Man of Steel director Zac Snyder; Merlin‘s Round Table Knights: King Arthur (Bradley James), Sir Percival (Tom Hopper), Sir Gwaine (Eoin Macken); and Sir Leon (Rupert Young); Star Trek‘s Leonard McCoy, Karl Urban; Firefly‘s Wash, Alan Tudyk; The Hobbit‘s dwarves: Kíli (Aidan Turner), Nori (Jed Brophy) and Ori (Adam Brown); plus many more.
As is seemingly tradition from my previous Supanova experience, it rained both days. This however didn’t deter the thousands of fans descending upon The Dome and Sydney’s Olympic Park. It was a pleasure for me this year to introduce the “Con” experience to my best friend, whom I have to say, is now addicted. As one of the MC’s kindly offered advice to first time “Con” goers, “Get out while you can!” Because before you know it, you’ll be attending more and collecting anything and everything. But honestly? I love it, so “get out” I shall not.
I’ll have to say I didn’t get much time this year to explore the booths (though they were pretty much the same as previous years) as I spent most of the time in panels (namely, the ones aforementioned).
Karl Urban threw us a bone and did a few characters, included his Doom character and Bones’: “Damn it Jim, I’m a doctor, not a physicist!”
Aidan Turner, Jed Brophy and Adam Brown all demonstrated the poses they did in Peter Jackson’s holiday gift, a dwarf calendar. For your information, Adam did the classic car wash pose on Jackson’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Jed posed like a mermaid and Aidan did the tango with a fellow dwarf. Something else you might not know, is that Adam Brown managed to convince the casting directors of Harry Potter (despite clearly not looking young enough to be a student) to be in the sixth movie as a student lighting up their wands during (spoiler alert) Dumbledore’s death scene.
Alan Tudyk spoke awhile in his “King Candy” voice (Wreck It Ralph) and, unfortunately, made the bold yet honest claim that there is no way the cast of Firefly can look younger than they were ten years ago, thus leaving a prequel movie mostly out of the question, which also means he won’t return should there ever be any form of Firefly continuation.
Bradley James, Eoin Macken, Rupert Young and Tom Hopper proved that they’re not only brothers in arms in Merlin, but also in real life. Also, Eoin will be creating a big bonfire with all the Smurfs toys he has received.
If you haven’t ever been to a Con yet, the next one, the big one, will be San Diego Comic-Con. Those who can’t make it would do well to keep checking this space for all of the juicy details as they develop.
