Below is the latest Press Release detailing the success of the Adelaide Oz Comic-Con event and the upcoming Melbourne leg of the tour.
WE CAME, WE SAW… WE OZ COMIC-CONQUERED.
It was with great aplomb that the first ever Adelaide Oz Comic-Con launched at the end of March (Saturday 31st, and Sunday April 1) at The Goyder Pavilion, Adelaide Showgrounds (www.ozcomiccon.com). Oz Comic-Con, bought to Adelaide by Sydney based company DCA Enterprises saw a massive 18k attendees through the door across the weekend (10k Saturday, 8.5k Sunday). Without a doubt this is an incredible feat for Oz Comic-Con’s debut and the event organisers, exhibitors, volunteers, special guests and everyone who came along should all be very proud for helping to make it such an incredible inaugural event.
Nerds, geeks and pop culture enthusiasts from all walks of life converged on the Show Grounds – with lines out the door even before the official 9am opening time. A range of celebrity guests attended the weekend festivities; with key guests including Sean Astin (Samwise Gamgee of The Lord of The Rings Trilogy), Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Norman Reedus (The Boondock Saints), Jewel Staite (Firefly, Serenity) and Disney Legend Bill Farmer (the voice of Goofy and Pluto, among others) all on the line-up.
The excitement extended beyond celebrity guests with Oz Comic-Con’s very own marriage proposal taking place on stage during the Day 1 Cosplay Competition. Here, a lycra-clad Superman (Patrick McBride) stood bended knee for his Supergirl (Jessica Locke) in front of a packed auditorium. Needless to say, Supergirl said yes and romance was once again proven alive and well!
There were over 50 exhibitors who took part in Oz Comic-Con over the weekend and retailer expectations were blown out of the water.
Sellers of rare merchandise, collectibles, games and clothing were astounded with the success of the event – with a number of exhibitors reporting that they had doubled, (and some even tripled!) their expected takings. The roaring trade on Day 1 meant that a number of local retailers returned home on Saturday evening to restock for Sunday.
When asked about the turn out – one half of DCA Enterprises, Event Director Rand Ratinac said, “…this was our first Oz Comic-Con and we are absolutely blown away by the incredible level of support and warm welcome we received from the Adelaide community. With Melbourne just around the corner, things are only going to get bigger and better!”.
For those who missed out don’t fret, Melbourne Oz Comic-Con will be here quicker than Disney’s Goofy can say “gawrsh!”. The Melbourne leg takes place on June 30th and July 1st 2012 and will play host to a new dose of international and local talent. So far leading the stellar lineup is Sir Patrick Stewart (X-Men, Star Trek) and Stan Lee (The Amazing Spider-Man); as well as key cast members from The Hunger Games and Oz Comic-Con’s newest addition, Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones, Stargate: Atlantis).
For full event details and line up can be found at www.ozcomiccon.com. Tickets are now available through Ticketmaster, and will be available for purchase on the door both days.
