Overview
The latest volume of Rumiko Takahashi’s epic adventure, InuYasha, begins with a moment of despair for Sesshomaru and Kohaku as they realize Rin, a young orphan who’s devoted herself to Sesshomaru, is not going to survive the venture in the Meido stone. No spoilers there as it occurs on the first few pages. However, Sesshomaru isn’t willing to accept that the girl is gone, so he decides to face the Lord of the Underworld in an attempt to get her back, even though he’s already saved her by using the Tenseiga, and that’s a one-time deal.
Meanwhile, InuYasha and gang find a blissful town that seems to help ease the looming sadness they all still feel over the loss of Kikyo. But when has paradise ever been that easy? It doesn’t take long for everyone (with the exclusion of Miroku, who comes down with hay fever because of the overabundance of flowers in the city) to realize that things aren’t all they seem. Said flowers are soothing and create happiness by sucking out people’s sadness. Yet sucking out the happiness not only causes the disturbing image of tears of blood, but it also takes advantage of their calm state of mind and tries to make them “one with the soil.” Which goes over about as well as you’d expect it to.
Highlights
As is always the case with Rumiko Takahashi, the story moves quickly. The three stories included in this volume are suspenseful, and you can all but hear Kagome’s heart break during one confrontation in the village. The fight scene at the end between InuYasha, who’s been forced to take on his demon form to survive, and Tetsusaiga keeps the pages turning as the battle leans more and more out of InuYasha’s favor.
Overall
InuYasha volume 48 is definitely worth the read, especially for avid fanswho’ve stuck it out all the way to get here. There’s angst, there’s suspense, there’s action, and although it sometimes feels like the stories are concluded a little too quickly, there is still much here to enjoy.
