DVD Review: Jim Gaffigan: King Baby

Jim Gaffigan: King Baby is a stand up special by comedian Jim Gaffigan, the exceptionally pale man behind Jim Gaffigan: Beyond the Pale, his previous special, who has also appeared in numerous film and television comedies.

Gaffigan has a very distinct, very silly persona for his stand up, which is particularly effective when he uses a high pitched voice to second guess himself, expressing the possible thoughts a critical member of the audience. He also uses his voice to create all kinds of ridiculous characters, which he uses while discussing all manners of inane topics. Overall, his stand up style is very effective.

Or it is..depending on the material. Despite his unique delivery, Gaffigan's material doesn't seem to be particularly original this time. Additionally, certain sequences are driven into the ground by repetition. For example, ten minutes of "bacon is tasty" jokes get old, even if you are occasionally pointing out that you have told way too many bacon jokes. While there are a handful of excellent jokes, this special does not feature Jim Gaffigan's best comedy work.

There is a good variety of special features on the DVD, including episodes of Pale Force, an animated superhero spoof mocking the skin tone of Gaffigan and Conan O'Brien, and Our Massive Planet, a nature documentary featuring Gaffigan as an expert with extremely limited expertise. Other bonus features include various interviews with Gaffigan, and some promotional shorts he did for Comedy Central.

Jim Gaffigan: King Baby might be worth checking out if you're a fan of stand up, but despite Gaffigan's unique, funny style, it doesn't represent his best material, and gets to be a little repetitive. The DVD is packed with a lot of Bonus Materials, which add a lot of value to the package, but overall, this comedy special isn't that special.

ComicsOnline gives Jim Gaffigan: King Baby 2 out of 5 bacon jokes.
