Blu-Ray Review: Pinocchio 70th Anniversary Edition

When You Wish Upon a Star
Walt Disney's 2nd animated feature-length film debuted 70 years ago, but only now do we have the technology to appreciate it better than it's ever been seen before. With Blu-ray, now we can watch it at home in the highest resolution to date, 1080p, and listen to its classic songs in DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 sound, which is likewise better than ever before. Like Bolt, which also was just released on DVD and Blu-ray, when you purchase the Pinocchio 70th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray, you also get it on DVD. So for those of you who don't want to buy it twice or maybe you want the DVD to put in the minivan for trips with the kids, now your wish has come true.

Little Wooden Head
Long before Bill Willingham turned Gepetto into the main villain of the first seventy-six-odd issues of Fables, Gepetto was a lonely childless woodcarver who through the magic of the Blue Fairy, brings a marionette to life as Pinocchio. Pinocchio experiences life by making mistakes and eventually learns right from wrong and is transformed from a self-aware puppet into a real human boy.

Give a Little Whistle
Pinocchio has delighted audiences for seventy years now with its five original songs (two of which are reprised later in the film) endearing characters and compelling story that is at once a stern warning against vice and an uplifting tale of positive personality growth and second chances at life.

Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee (An Actor's Life for Me)
Pinocchio 70th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray is a perfect example of the best Disney has to offer. Sure, today's Pixar films are amazing, but does a Bug's Life or Cars hold up against Pinocchio? Of course not. Pick up this seventy year old gem that's just been re-cut and polished to look better than ever and share it with your own children. Maybe you'll become a real boy all over again right along with them.
