Blu-ray Review: Passion of the Christ

The Passion of the Christ, the extremely controversial film from Director Mel Gibson, is now available on Blu-ray.

Story
Long story short: The film tells the tale of the arrest, crucifixion, and eventual resurrection of Jesus Christ based on Christian beliefs. Jesus and his apostles Peter, James and John are in Gethsemane and are approached by Judas. Judas arrests Jesus and lets his apostles go free. Jesus is tried under the belief from certain priests that he is not the Son of God and is sentenced to death. Pontius Pilate takes Jesus to Herod Antipas for a second ruling and it is determined that Jesus will be crucified instead. Jesus dies on the cross and is buried in a tomb…only to be resurrected shortly after…

Overall
This film was extremely controversial when it was released due to how religious events were handled in this film. It was very graphic and difficult to get through…and felt over the top violent and disturbing. It was even more difficult to watch this film in high definition due to the themes. The special features are interesting and if you like documentaries of historical accounts. It seems that the narrative and message is somewhat lost in Mel Gibson’s take on historical events.

ComicsOnline gives The Passion of the Christ on Blu-ray 2 out of 5 historical films.
